Tuesday the 6th

Today was our first preaching day here in Orange Walk. The family that is hosting us for the week used to be in sign language so today the daughter went with us and using a short list combined by her folks, we set out to meet the contacts.

Yes, we are, Tom & Kathy! Sunny and warm!

First we met with the English congregation here and then struck out as our own little group. Here is a photo of the whole group from this morning, English and Spanish.

First we went to a deaf man’s house but he was not at home. So then we went by his work and we saw that he was working. We decided to try to catch him during his lunch break later today.

Then we went to a deaf woman’s house but could not confirm that she still lived there as no one was home. Then we tried another deaf woman. Bris & I & Nate first tried the house next-door to her, since we knew who lived there and we were hopeful they would help us confirm or denied that the deaf woman still live there. However no one came to the door, so then we knocked directly on the deaf woman’s house but no answer. There were dogs in the yard but they could not be bothered. Just then we saw a woman hanging laundry out at the back of the first house so we went back over and tried to get her attention. Finally we succeeded and she went right over and knocked on the deaf woman‘s house again . She brought her out and we were able to meet her and chat.

A, whose sign name is JR...

We began to appreciate that last week, since it was a holiday time, we were able to find so many In Belize city. However we also knew were most of them worked and we were able to find them at work. We didn’t necessarily have the same advantage here. So then we tried another deaf woman’s house. Her father was home and confirmed that she didn’t live here anymore. As it was almost lunchtime, we decided to go by where the first deaf man worked, to see if he was off for his lunch break. He was the guys were able to chat with him. Then we stopped by a few grocery stores & the market and then headed back to the house, for lunch and then continued on for the afternoon.

One of the markets in town, not the big one

We stopped by one of the contacts from this morning but they were still not at home. Then we called on a local brother. He had been instrumental in helping us find lodging for this week and so we wanted to thank him in person. It turns out he is from Bermuda and we know friends in common! We spent a wonderful hour together listening to stories and then we struck out again.

Sheridan - we hope our paths cross again

We tried two more contacts and our last call of the day was home! We met a deaf teenage girl and invited her to the meeting on Sunday. She used to study with our host sister and so we offered for her and her two deaf cousins to join us for Sunday’s meeting.
