Wednesday the 31st

Aka Day 2 of our “preaching campaign”

Today we met with the Kriol group at the Kingdom Hall. No one from Kriol was available to work with us so we took a few leads that we had from yesterday and  started out.

Nate interpreting the preaching meeting

We walked down the street to an upholstery shop, but because it was New Year’s Eve, the gate was closed. So we went to the building next-door but that was also closed. So then we went across the street to a furniture store and Nate & Horace went in to ask if there were any deaf in the the area. The employees there said that they knew of two deaf that regularly came in.

Meanwhile across the street at a little food shack, Reymona & I asked if they knew any deaf. They knew of the man who worked at the upholstery shop and they said that he had walked past that morning. We asked if he lived in the area but they didn’t know. They also mentioned that there was a deaf man who worked in the construction at the lot behind the food shack. When we got together with the guys, we updated them and decided that we would try the upholstery shop later in the day to see if they were open then.

Then we walked down towards the bus station because one of the brothers at the meeting this morning had said that there was a deaf man who worked at the bus station. We walked down and on the way there was a sister who recognized us. She said hello and we took a picture together.

We went to the bus station but there weren’t any deaf working there. So then we turned around and went back to the car. Once we reached the car, Horace decided that we should check out the upholstery shop again so we walked back down. This time we noticed that there was a side entrance on another street and that was the main entrance. They were open!

We walked in and met the deaf man that works there. He was so excited to see Horace. We made arrangements to visit him at his home tomorrow. After that we walked back down to the construction lot and ask about the deaf man that worked there. They hadn’t seen him in a while so they didn’t know if he had left for the holidays.

We were only planning on working about a half a day and by now it was about lunchtime. We stopped by a grocery store for a break and got a few groceries. We still had a few leads left and so we discussed going back home to drop off the groceries. On the way back home we remembered that one of the leads was right near the grocery store and so we thought let’s check out this lead and then we’ll go home. So Reymona and I went inside this department store and we met a wonderful deaf lady. Since she was working we made arrangements to contact her on Thursday since she would have the day off because of the holiday. I asked her where she lived if she lived in the city and she said no, I live in Boom. I said really?! that’s where the deaf man that we met this morning lives! Since we’re already going out there we’ll see you both. We exchanged numbers. Then we went home!

Other photos from the day…

This guy brought his smoker to the corner to sell it

The upholstery shop owner

This case of La Croix costs about $17.30 USD

This is similar to the grill we have… here it is “on sale” for $900 USD

At this point, I should be saying at least they have Maker’s, right?!

I don’t know where they found this “vintage” smoked sausages… talk about time travel! And yes, they were in date.
